Growing Up Online
The PBS presentation "Growing Up Online" highlights the dangers and concerns of social media as well as how it changed future generations and society as a whole. This presentation provides the positives of social media as well as the negatives. Some positive impacts that social media and the internet have had on society is the ability to obtain tons of information right at your fingertips as well as how means of communication have become a lot more convenient. Because of social media and the internet as a whole, people are capable of sending out emails rather than going face to face to talk to someone or by making a phone call. Students are capable of searching the web for information that they need to obtain for their assignments instead of looking through numerous amounts of textbooks or just simply not having access to information at all. Teenagers are using social media as a way to express themselves in a way they don't feel comfortable in public.
Some negative impacts that social media and the internet have had on society are that your safety is mainly at risk and not everything that says its private is really private. Because of the internet, it is easier for predators to try to get to you. People don't realize that the things you post on social media can put your life at risk. Teenagers post personal things as a way to get people to empathize with them and they try to add hundreds of friends that they don't really know on social media in order to gain recognition and popularity. Predators can learn a lot about someone from the internet such as their location and the places that they go to often. A negative impact of social media that occurs all over the world is cyberbullying. Teenagers often tend to pick fights with other people on the internet because they find it entertaining or because it may be something that they're afraid to say in real life. Some people just cyberbully others just to be mean and make others feel bad about themselves. Because of cyberbullying, suicide rates have increased because of social media and it's an issue that teachers and parents can't seem to control. Although there are many benefits to social media such as it being a more convenient way to communicate with others, social media risks the safety of teenagers and the people around them.
I would have to disagree on the idea that social media risks the safety of teenagers and everyone around them. I think social media has more positives than negatives. I believe kids have more knowledge on the internet than they're given credit, these kids know what to avoid and what is suspect on the internet. of course we can't ignore the bullying online, but that happens regardless. The internet opens a whole new world of socializing, allowing people to be themselves and not be afraid to speak to people. It aids kids in school and creates cheaper and easier resources and overall is more helpful than harmful.
